How to find time for your side projects
Imagine what you could do with an extra 174 hours per year!
Hey you,
Today, I want to talk about how eliminating your distractions will allow you to build your side projects. When you work a 9 - 5, go to the gym, and decompress at night, it’s hard to find extra time for projects. But what if I told you you had an extra hour in the evening? Joe, a client, gained about an hour daily by reducing his phone time from 5.55 to 4.88 hours daily. That’s an extra 174 hours or 7.26 days per year (5 days/week * 52 weeks/year * .67 hour/day = 174 hours/year) of free time. Think about what you could do in 7 days! That’s a whole vacation!
Joe found himself
Checking his phone for “5 minutes” and then spending 30 minutes scrolling
with no free time for his other projects
Struggling to be alone and constantly craving his phone
Incapable of focusing without checking his phone periodically
The Culprit is Social Media
In this order, the main culprits were Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok. When he reduced these, he gained about an hour of free time. With this time, he was able to work on his ideas. Joe recaptured 1 hour per day by
Designating 1 hour in his calendar to work on his idea
Putting his phone away during project time
Sending me a picture of his screen time every morning
Hiring a coach to hold him accountable and analyze his patterns
Recently, he deleted the apps from his phone. Now, he only uses social media after he completes his project time. He has no problem focusing during work and his free time. He’s planning on increasing his project time to push his projects even further.
Conclusion
When you eliminate your distractions, you’ll complete your project and turn your ideas into income. Social media is one of the big distractors, and many more are stealing your time away from becoming an entrepreneur. Check your phone time. How much of your day are you losing to social media? How much farther would you be if you had an extra 174 hours?
Don’t be scared to ask for help
It’s okay to ask for help. Joe did, and now he has the free time to become an entrepreneur. As ADHDers, we perform better when we have pressure. Think back to school or even work; you probably wait until the last minute, but you get things done. Outside of work, there isn’t anyone watching over your free time and creating that pressure.
